EV Charging Station FAQ

Electric vehicle

When buying your first electric vehicle, like the Chevy Bolt EV, you probably have some questions. Among the most important is how to transition between gas and charging stations. After all, the process is different from what you are used to, so Kearny Mesa Chevrolet offers answers to some frequently asked questions about EV charging.

How does electric charging work?

There are three main types of EV battery charging. Level one is a standard plug you have in your house. It takes the longest but can be done at home. Level two uses a 240-volt appliance outlet custom-installed at home or found at many public charging stations. Level three, or DC Fast Charging, is somewhat less common but is also your fastest option.

How long does it take to charge?

Charging times differ depending on factors like which type of charger you are using and whether you are charging 100%. Typically, Level 3 is the fastest, with a Chevy Bolt EV able to add 100 miles of range in 30 minutes.

How often does it need charging?

This, too, depends on use. The best practice is to keep your charge from falling below 20 percent and not charging above 80 percent since this keeps your battery in peak condition.

Where can I find a charging station?

All new Chevy electric vehicles come with a free standard Level 2 charging outlet installation for eligible customers. However, you’ll still need to top off on longer trips, and that’s where the myChevrolet® Mobile App comes in handy since it helps you locate the nearest charger even when you’re somewhere unfamiliar.

What does it cost to charge at a station?

In the US, charging costs vary but remain far cheaper than gasoline. Charging stations can offer pay-as-you-go or subscription services to cut costs for repeat charges. Home charging is best done during off-peak hours to save money; this is typically overnight, so it shouldn’t disrupt your schedule.
